Lawyer Akhmed Yakoob who stood as an independent candidate for both the West Midlands mayoral election and the general election in 2024.
He is being charged alongside accountant Nabeel Afzal, 38, The national crime agency (NCA) say they’re facing three charges each.
Yakoob, of Perry Barr, and Azfal, of Edgbaston, both in Birmingham, are accused of money laundering, encouraging money laundering and contravening a requirement to apply customer due diligence measures when establishing a business relationship.
The pair will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 17.
In the last general election he attempted to become MP in the Birmingham Ladywood constituency, which is currently held by Shabana Mahmood.
He performed well and managed to come second in the polls with 12,137 votes compared to Mahmood’s 15,558.
He also came third in the West Midlands mayoral election with 69,621 votes.
