PRS for Music (Performing Right Society) is a UK-based organization that helps ensure musicians get paid when their music is played publicly. Whether you’re a musician wanting to earn royalties, or a business using music in a public place, PRS plays a vital role.
How to use PRS as a musician or songwriter:
1. Join PRS for Music
To begin collecting royalties, you must first become a member. To become a member you’ll need to:
-
Ensure you’re the writer or publisher of the music.
-
Pay a one-time membership fee of £100 (£30 if you’re under 25).
-
Register your works (songs, compositions, etc.).
2. Register Your Works
Once you’re a member, you need to register each of your compositions. This ensures PRS knows what to track and pay you for.
3. PRS Tracks Your Music Usage
PRS will collect royalties when your music is:
-
Played on radio or TV.
-
Performed live (gigs, concerts & clubs).
-
Streamed or downloaded.
-
Played in public spaces.
4. Receive Royalties
You will get paid on quarterly basis depending on how often your music was used. You can track all this in your online PRS dashboard. Sign up now.
How to use PRS as a Business/Licensee
1. Get a PRS Licence
If you play music in a public space such as a café, office, shop, gym, or at an event—you legally must have a PRS licence. Get it here.
Why?
Because music is copyrighted and requires permission from the copyright owners, enables artists to get compensated fairly & prevents your business from receiving fines that will come if you play music without a license.
2. Choose the Right Licence
PRS (often together with PPL under “TheMusicLicence”) offers different packages depending on:
-
Type of business.
-
Size of venue.
-
How you use music.
3. Pay an Annual Fee
Fees vary depending on your business type and usage. PRS uses your fee to compensate musicians.
4. Stay Compliant
Holding a licence protects you legally and helps support the music industry by compensating creators fairly.
