UK rapper Stormzy arrived at the prestigious University of Cambridge to receive an doctorate degree on Wednesday.

The London based grime artist, real name Michael Omari Owuo Junior, will be awarded a doctorate in law during a special congregation at Senate House.

Stormzy’s doctorate in law is in recognition of his philanthropic work including in education, music, sport and literature.

In 2018 the grime behemoth launched a scholarship programme at the university which allowed black British students to get each year for their tuition and maintenance costs fully covered.

The scholarship originally had only two spaces but now has 10 spaces.

The rapper originally announced his scholarship scheme during an appearance at his former school, the Harris City Academy in Croydon, south London, in 2018.

He said: “We’re a minority, the playing ground isn’t level for us and it’s vital that all potential students are given the same opportunity.”

The scholarship aims to encourage the admission of more black students to top universities, after the Financial Times exposed the fact that some Cambridge colleges didn’t take in any black students from 2012 to 2016.

On BBC Stormzy previously stated “If you’re academically brilliant don’t think because you come from a certain community that studying at one of the highest education institutions in the world isn’t possible.”.

The MOBO winning artist has academic prowess himself as he achieved six A*s, three A’s and three B’s at GCSE; however didn’t attend university as he was developing his craft in music.
