The group, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation is led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri and have currently suspended the constitution, dissolved institutions, and closed both air and sea borders.

This happened after the countries President Patrice Talon had his residence attacked whilst gunfire was heard from his property.

Benin’s government responded quickly, stating Talon is safe, loyal forces control most of the army, andclaim the plotters at the TV station are being surrounded.

This follows regional coups in the country.

Benin Republic is ranked as one of west Africa’s most peaceful countries.
